Good morning! It's Wednesday July 2, 2025, and in this edition of The Daily Briefing, The Clintwood Splash Pad is still down, West End Pharmacy continues cleanup and the marquee sign of The Jettie Baker Center is going back up.
Dickenson supervisor Rhonda Sluss informed residents by social media that Virginia Department of Emergency Management officials will be touring Dickenson County this week. Clintwood Fire and Rescue had a busy Tuesday night working one accident and then having to respond to a call in Clintwood.
In addition, State Police are requesting patience if traveling this holiday weekend, the Virginia Department of Corrections reports a donation being made for two K9’s in memory of a K9 that was killed in an incident.
We continue to follow stories through Commonwealth News in regard to the resignation of Jim Ryan as President of the University of Virginia and the Trump bill that could have devasting effects on local hospitals, Medicaid and recipients. We’re following other news that affects our region and part of the world here in Dickenson County.
WEATHER
A lot of stormy weather came through Tuesday and more rain is expected today as temperatures will cool slightly from our 90+ readings last week but begin to inch up into the 90’s by the July 4th weekend. NEWS
Clintwood’s Splash Pad is still closed due to a blown fuse and other electrical issues. An electrician was scheduled to look at the situation on Monday. The town will notify the public when the Splash Pad gets back into full operation. As of late Tuesday, the part needed for the Splash Pad is not expected until late in the week.
West End Pharmacy continues their clean up after a fire last Thursday. Management has announced plans for a temporary facility but is asking for the public and customers’ patience as they try to resume operations.
The marquee sign in front of The Jettie Baker Center is going back up as of Tuesday. It’s a welcome sight for sure. Town police are urging caution and to pay attention to traffic if heading through town.
Clintwood District supervisor Rhonda Sluss informs citizens that representatives from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management are coming to Dickenson County this week to look at damage to the county’s rivers and streams. They will also be looking at trees, debris, mudslides and other remnants of flooding from this year that need to be removed. Sluss reminds residents that they can call or text her at 276-870-8453 if anyone in the Clintwood District have experienced damage.
The Clintwood Fire Department had a busy Tuesday evening. They responded to a motor vehicle crash with injury at Darwin at the intersection of Rockhouse Road and Coeburn Road on State Route 72. While on scene, dispatch advised them of a smoke alarm at Dollar General in Clintwood. Truck 1 and Engine 1 arrived at Dollar General to find no smoke or fire showing. Crews determined it to be a false alarm, reset the system, and returned to the crash site to assist. Clintwood Rescue transported one patient to the hospital for further evaluation.
If you are planning to travel this July 4th holiday, Virginia State Police are urging patience and caution during this heavily travelled holiday.
Virginia Department of Corrections K9s Pablo and Rebel will receive bullet and stab protective vests thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

Dollywood informed us by a press release on Monday afternoon that Blazing Fury,
a staple of the park going back to the Silver Dollar City days will re-open on Friday July 4th. The Pigeon Forge Fire Department will have the honor of riding the indoor ride to inaugurate the return of Blazing Fury.

The Dickenson County Extension Office continues to seek students for Summer Camps sponsored by 4-H, and the town of Clintwood is ready to celebrate the 4th of July with a big extravaganza.
Dolly’s Splash Country celebrates public employees with Appreciation Days through July 31.
The Jettie Baker Center resumes their concert series with Magnolia Boulevard and The Jenkins Twins on August 2.
