With temperatures climbing, Appalachian Power (APCo) is urging its customers to be extra careful about potential scams. The company issued a warning on Monday, advising vigilance against various utility-related schemes.
According to APCo, scammers often exploit extreme weather conditions to target vulnerable individuals. They use high-pressure tactics, demanding immediate payment, threatening service disconnection, or falsely claiming partnerships with APCo to offer bill reductions through things like solar installations.
It's important to remember that APCo will never call and demand immediate payment using prepaid cards, gift cards, or digital payment apps like CashApp or Venmo. They also won't send representatives to your home or business to collect payments to prevent disconnection or to sell products such as solar panels.
Customers should never give out personal or banking information to unverified callers. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and contact APCo directly using the number provided on your bill to verify any claims. If someone shows up at your door claiming to be from APCo, always ask for official identification. Any scam attempts should be reported to your local law enforcement.
For peace of mind, customers can always check their account status through APCo's official website or mobile app.
